After a recent therapy session working with a client who I have known for several years, I was reflecting on how privileged I am to be working in an environment where I help people shape their lives for the better.
I didn’t get here without hardwork and it hasn’t all been sunshine and roses. You see before this I lived another life – the one with a well-paid but time demanding corporate job. And while the money was nice, being dissatisfied and drained at the end of the day left me feeling like I was running on empty and I didn’t know how to fix it.
After much personal work and accumulated study I finally took the leap and began my own business (part time at first). As I ventured into self-employment I learnt that helping other people to be happy, fulfilled and joyful in their lives is my real purpose. It’s what makes my heart sing and I am even good at it!
Which brings to mind a quote from Joseph Campbell which says simply: “follow your bliss”. You see when we stop arguing with ourselves and follow our bliss we stop getting in our own way.
I believe that knowing what we value or prioritise in life and why, means we can follow our bliss to take inspired action, and live a more fulfilled life in the process of achieving our dreams. And when that happens, life is really a much more enjoyable ride.
The career I have built enables me to support numerous members within a family (mum, dad and their child) to help all of them be their best and happiest. Supporting pregnant mums for birth preparation, through motherhood and as they adjust to an entirely different life with children.
And that makes me happy.
So what is your bliss?
Do you know what your priorities or values are in life, and do these align and work together like a streamlined high performance machine?
If you are finding an area of your life that isn’t working or where you are bitterly unhappy/ miserable, then you are probably having a values conflict.
Getting help to work this out is something I strongly recommend, because it can transform your life in a very short amount of time just by realising where you are pushing against yourself and your own happiness.
And that is where having a coach, therapist or really insightful friend comes in.
Every year as I get clearer on my values and how to live in alignment with them I find my life gets easier and more satisfying. I also get more of what I want with a lot less push and shove!
