Our family has experienced a loss last week. And the passing of our dog seems to have hit me hardest – possibly because he was like my first child (here for 3+ years before I had my son).

In reflecting on his passing, I’ve been noticing how after 11 years it can be so easy to take someone for granted – human or otherwise – and thus have been reminded of the importance of gratitude and being present with each day. This is also something that has reinforced the importance of slowing down and bringing in more self care.

I believe grief is a process, and it will always take time, tears and plenty of self allowance to go slow in each day and sit with my emotions fully.

Of course, I have also been using my oils over last few days to get through this challenging time with just a little less discomfort. While there is no right or wrong ways to use essential oils for emotional support (intuition always knows best), what I did was was the following..

Diffusing

  • Console and Easy Air.
  • I’ve also covered my lava bead bracelet with these two blends, so I can smell them as needed throughout this difficult day – the body acts as a natural diffuser !

Aromatic dressing

Topically applying

  • Easy Air to my throat, heart and wrists as needed during the day.
  • This is usually followed by a second layer of Peace to these same areas.
  • Then I will put some Console or Peace to my forehead.

On the day of his passing (our dog was put down) I lathered myself in Peace and Easy air as detailed above, and reapplied every few hours as needed.

What I’m using varies slightly each day, but for now these three blends are definitely what I’m feeling most drawn to. That and lots of time sitting quietly on the sunshine and letting the tears flow as often as they wanted to.

How do you nourish yourself during times of heartfelt grief?
