As a coach and therapist, I have noticed the yearly pattern of people coming to make health changes (eg. quit smoking, lose weight, quit sugar) around the new year period. This means January is often a very busy time for a hypnotherapist!
But personally I’m not a fan of this approach because most often a ‘lose weight’ resolution lacks the broader determination, willingness and commitment a person needs to improve their life on an ongoing basis.
Now I’m not trying to be overly harsh because – Yes, I know that we all want to lose weight yesterday. We all want things to change quickly once a decision has been made. But in my experience change happens easiest when it is done in a more gradual, integrated way. This means putting things in place to support the change on an ongoing basis.
Did you know that 95% of people who set New Year’s resolutions don’t follow through? The reason is they don’t understand the process of how to produce lasting results—so they never take all of the necessary steps.
This means that instead of dieting for 30 days then falling back into old habits, it is possible to take a more flexible approach where we put things in place to so we can begin to think and act differently, then maintain these changes over time.
This is precisely what a coach does; we support you to change your mindset, habits and old limitations, in order to put a better set of mindsets and habits in place. My preferred approach to do this (instead of the traditional model of goal setting) involves intention setting.
What is Intention setting??
Intention setting is a more fluid and female oriented way of embracing a desire for change, without feeling like we have to force it to happen. By holding “the intention” to do something differently we can start to really feel the desire in our body, imagine what it’s like to achieve the outcome, and then allow ourselves to move towards this experience with more flow, grace and flexibility.
The other great thing about intention setting is that if we get side-tracked (as happens occasionally) the desire is still in place to achieve the outcome / have the experience, so we simply reconnect to our intention instead of viewing a lack of achievement as failure.
If you are eager to experience / explore this idea of intention setting download my free Intention setting guide from 2016 here.
But as with many things in life, this process is often easier experienced in person…
Intention setting with a coach
As someone who has been part of a coaching / mentoring model for nearly 20 years, I strongly think everyone should have a mindset coach to provide encouragement and give clarity as needed. Really having a coach is like having a personal trainer for mindset (since mindset is the predominant thing which gets us out of bed to DO the exercise!). When it comes to setting intentions or having some type of outcome, the more clarity we can achieve through this process, the more likely it is we will achieve it. And that is precisely why getting a coach to support you in this way is so valuable.
If you are looking for ways to get more clarity or remove unconscious blocks for a better 2017, don’t leave it to chance! Read more about working with me here or get in touch and lets chat about what might be possible for you.
